We visited the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History while in Albuquerque last weekend. It contained a large number of military exhibits including replicas of “Fat Man and Little Boy,“ the bombs that leveled Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also two of the four thermonuclear devices we accidently dropped on Spain in 1966 (without exploding), and backpack A-Bombs that our paratroopers once carried. Their outdoor exhibits included a B-52 Strato-fortress, a B-29 Super-fortress (think Enola Gay), an atomic cannon, and a retired ICBM. I took a photo of the inside of the business end of the one of the ICBM’s rocket engines. The little black dots are fuel inlets for the combustion chamber. All I could see though, were ghosts.

Poem Artwork

Intricate metal forged by man

Designed to deliver Hell

Ghostly images of people spared

By the bomb that never fell

Warm world locked inside cold war

The remnants slowly thaw

As conflicts brew their toxic stew

Begun with “Shock and Awe”

There is no doubt that we were harmed

We cried revenge at any cost

But now a decade has been spent

More lives and treasure lost

The tactics cannot work long term

Occupation will not tame

Hawk or dove, kill or love

The result will be the same

It’s time to bring our loved ones home

And at the next Jihadist try

We’ll send a package COD

Of ghost riders in the sky

I like what you saw and the way you put it into words. Mistakes are so easily repeated, it's scary. Expressive descriptions in "Intricate metal forged by man/Designed to deliver Hell" and "Warm world locked inside cold war".

Great poem and well said, my friend. Hope it never comes to that and can't begin to comprehend the reprocussions if it ever does.

Thanks Dick

Absolutely amazing....I think they should take children from kindergarten right through college to tour museums like that to show them how stupid previous generations were....and hopefully they'll realize they are the ones who can make the world a better place.....I see the ghosts too....that's what I thought the pic was when I first looked at it....very clever shot, Patrick!

Quite profound. And that picture is quite powerful; I see many skeletons (or perhaps ghosts), with hollow eyes.

You have a keen eye for detail. I have not been there yet, but have been to quite a few bases across the country. Amazing reflection upon mankind...

Be always safe,
