Every once in a while...a poignant question arises in our society. Sometimes it's subtle...the suggestion coming as perhaps an after thought. But other times...the question is louder and more insistent, supported by news articles sporting bold, dark captions which grab our attention. And the question is; '...Should 'Black History Month' Be Discontinued...???" I say, NO!...it should NOT be discontinued!!! Why? Because our little ones should know that their 'roots' did not begin with shackles, chains and slave blocks. They should know that a 'heavy' price was paid for our living. Knowledge is important, however, what is even more important is the...'way'...knowledge is imparted. 'Knowledge' can be presented with a positive or negative connotation. Thus...since it is only through the programs and festivities of 'Black History Month' that many of our youths will be given the opportunity to see the 'meaningful beauty' of our pilgrimage...the continuation of 'Black History Month' is so important. Pressing-on!

Some change is good. But why have change when it does so much good? Some things should only be changed for the better. Perhaps have an American Cultural History Month where we truly celebrate diversity? That is pretty standard in my church as we celebrate the joining hands and praying together from many races and cultures ever week.

Totally agree. Roots need to investigated by each and every person. Many times you get surprises and find out that your roots are not quite what you thought they where and this changes the moment you are in. I'm going to my homelands over the next many years. My ancestory is all over Europe and Asia. LOL. Thanks for this sharing.

All the colours of the rainbow and more flood into Black, retaining their original hue intact though perhaps unseen for what it truly is... such is a hint of the rich nuance conveyed by your acrostic and its representation here... blessings now and always, Joyce.
I totally agree with your last stanza Joyce and empathize with your concerns.
I have entertained two schools of thought on the subject. 1) Dedicate a month of historical reflection for every ethnicity =12 months should be enough to avoid bias. 2) Abolish black history month. ~ End segregation and begin real integration into American history ~
Just my opinion... Add $5 to it and it will get you a gallon o gas.

While Debtors prisons no longer exist, many people continue to be persecuted for crimes related to poverty or inability to repay money owed to municipalities. This practice remains in an injustice that needs to be rectified.
