DISCERNMENT

For you cannot discern the "signs of the time." You may not even know what time it is. Reading this prose poem can help you to fathom the hidden, judge
properly or discern.

When obscureness clouds understanding or befuddles the mind, prompting misjudgment or indecision, hopefully before, but if not, then discernment, the heart of wisdom, is needed.
Even with the best of intention if we act out of ignorance and make the wrong diagnosis, we may prescribe a treatment that harms rather than helps. Again it is discernment that is needed, hopefully before intent that is not accompanied by understanding is acted upon.
What is discernment? Discernment is a loaded term that can best be defined or described by the meanings of four other terms. They are:
perception - the awareness of not just the obvious but the deceptive and subliminal implications, shades of feeling and motives;

penetration - an inquiring mind that goes beyond what is obvious and superficial by making a depth-connection and tapping the roots of the matter of concern;

acumen - the characteristic penetration combined with keen practical judgment; and

Insight - the act or power of seeing into a situation or result of apprehending the inner nature of things or of seeing intuitively.

The harmonization of perception, penetration, acumen and insight indicates functionally the meanings of the noun-verb-adjective language form classes and the realms of discernment.
From this description it is obvious that no attempt should be made to limit discernment even when its acute application is to a specific situation that may be a matter more of intuition than intention.
Both practically and ultimately, discernment is fundamentally and primarily about meaning. Meaning is discovered or detected, not created or invented. The meaning that is meant is inherent and present, even when it is not revealed.
What does it mean? Only discernment can answer that question. This is a question that life has already asked every person. The question is answered through human personality. So what can I discern? This is not only a legitimate question to be asked, it is a question that must be answered if a person is to have meaning, fulfillment and happiness. These things are possible for anyone and they may be within the present grasp of a person who does not realize that they are because he has not discerned the "signs of the time" which declare that "now is the acceptable time."
This is progressive revelation that continues to be manifested humanly in learning, living and loving and divinely in trust, faith and hope.
