Lost In Abandonment

Majestic spires summon,
acknowledge my return.
Familiar voices murmur,
eerie, dire refrain.

Granite walls unstable,
marble floors awake.
Winding spiral staircase,
windows void, opaque.

Gauntlet halls archaic,
gargoyles speech rhetoric,
mythical baneful sounds
all so allegoric.

Wretched ungodly symbols,
tortured twisted souls.
Resounding blaring trumpets,
accounts unsettled, cold.

Wistful winds persuasive,
calloused hearts relate.
Raison d'être evasive,
wandering spirits wait.

Challenged chalice chastised,
homage ne'er partake.
Wailing banshies exorcised
Elated heart awakes.

I had've had the pleasure of seeing many old churches. This poem portarys those images, perfectly. Yet, I feel as though this speaks to the awakening of a heart - be it God, family, love, home, etc. - the old familiar seen though new eyes.

God bless you. Kathy

This sounds like the after life or the "next level" maybe of man's existence where our souls wander and wait for the final judgment... i'm not sure, Paul, but this is really thought provoking and deep, something to really ponder... Be blessed, my good friend.

Hugs and lots of love,
Sheri

Love the flow of this poem. Very creative rhyme scheme as well. This has a dream-like quality until the very last line, where a different feel takes over and stays with the reader. Terrific poem, Paul!

Going back is always wonderful in our minds until the reality strikes that nothing is ever as it was. But we wouldn't miss it.

Very strong images, Paul, both physical and emotional. This is the kind of verse to have a drink over, but I'm not sure whether to drown my sorrows or toast my success. But, what the hell, a drink is a drink, eh? Somethin's gotta exorcise those wailing banshies and keep the wistful winds from chilling me to the bone.

Mystical and alchemic verses, Paul, and the metre and flow are sublime. This is your forte, I know. Both colourful and black-and-white, I love the images you paint for us here. And the effect is much more cleansing than a good hairwash! LOL You could produce for us a whole balladic tale, I think. Bless you, Kate xx
