Mind’s Heartbeat

I was lying there,
trying to will a vision to come,
trying to learn more about my mind,
an occupational hazard
when you are a poet, and I felt tingling
cupped around the back of my head.
I concentrated, pushed everything else out,
and I knew what it was. It was my heartbeat,
inside my head; pulsing, nourishing, reaching…
I felt delight, and something more.
As I lay there, on my stomach, I felt Life.
I became aware of the heart in my chest,
turned up the sound and sensitivity.
With each pound, I felt the blood actually
rushing down through my arteries, ending
at my feet. So I pitched my pumping heart
into waves of sensation, enrapturing myself.
For a few minutes, anyway, then
my heartbeat faded back to normal.
And I was left wondering, lying there,
what else my mind can do…
