Sunflower Towers

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Saturday, September 11, 2004

I have towers in my head.

I have towers in my yard,
sunflower towers.

Both are dead.

One tower I tied to a branch above, with my hand and heart.

The other tower has, wound about its core, a morning glory vine, which climbed this tower’s bones onto a branch above my mind, where it blooms in triumph.

One tower bound by Man, one tower bound by the land. Both are dead.

The morning glory lives.

In the end, dear Erin, you remind us that this day, this mourning-glory of a day, is, at its 'base' about nature: human nature, mother nature. Too often, when one ties itself to the other without care, there is chaos. I lift my glass and my heart to that surviving flower... it is, for me, our only hope. I'm entirely collapsed with this one... quiet impact is it's own message. Beautiful. katy xox.
