Discretionary Distance

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Saturday, October 2, 2004

Where I live, in this mountain desert state,
discretionary distance becomes innate;
land of thorns, of fangs, of searing heat,
separation of self degrees the oblique
from sands arid acrimony of fright.
Hot rattle-snaked days and scorpion nights,
discretionary distances of lows and highs
purport protection from poison’s guise;
step softly, step slow – now, quickly,
let’s go – the cacti repent as we flee
to a distance discretionary.
To be free of these, take this non-guarantee,
to travel stark canyons and rocky slopes.
If you’re careful, you can keep your hopes.

Where I live, in Arizona’s deserted lands,
nothing is above wariness’ demands;
when summer sun is hidden in dark monsoon;
when coyotes chorus howls at dusty moons;
it’s best to keep a discretionary distance.
As lightning flares with electric resistance
and hair stands on end with frightening persistence,
desert people hide from barrens existence.
Gila monster feigns desiccated disinterest,
tarantula stalks on its predatory quest,
horned lizards lurk, armor entrenched,
and buzzards home in on decomposing stench.
Discretionary distance needs to be desert applied,
if you don’t want to end up like those who’ve died.

Erin, these are great lines that grab me and pull me into
your fascinating poem of Arizona's desert lands. They also
remind me of why I love living by the sea. -gene.

This title, "Discretionary Distance" is a lesson itself. I have learned from reading "Discretionary Distance".

The closing lines flash up the light of harmony.

I salute You, Sublime Poet!

Fascinating glimpse at desert life in you home state, Erin. And every time I visit the deserts of the Southwest, I am captivated by its stark richness, and I love to wander its landscape, marveling at its exotic life.

Well Done!

Erin this is a fantastic glimpse into a world I don't know!
New Zealand is a natural bird sanctuary. We have no predatory animals (outside the city!;-) lol!) and no poisonous ah.... anything elses - bar one small spider called the 'Katipo' which most of us have never seen! My children walk to school bare footed as I did when I was their age - shoes are often just a fashionable option!!!
Great write, thanks!
