The Treason of Emotions

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

(There is a core,
within I,
that could be a better Me
than me,
than we…)

People seem to look for happiness
as life's reward, think it will fulfill the emptiness
of our ‘ends’ fundamental doubt.
It seems ridiculous to base our lives
on happiness.

Do you think some of us progress backwards?
Go from an adult to a wise child, who can’t laugh?
Don’t you think doubts inside, which we try to hide,
wouldn’t be better off aired out?

I beg to differ, on the happiness issue, it may be
the ultimate level we can reach, but, in
relativity to the unfathomable differing realities
of over six billion people on this planet,
I think people live to survive. Not just war,
intolerance, inequality and antipathy, but,
nature, spiritualism, the unknown, and,
themselves. Myself…

Do you think a god has doubts?
Wonder what its Godhead is about?
After all, gods are only elevated
by those below them in evolution,
due to the doubtful grace of Time’s
stability, its eternity, in a straight-line thought,
anyway. Do you think a butterfly, being
eaten alive by a Praying Mantis, has
coherent ‘thoughts’ on its own death?

I doubt.
I doubt we know as much as we think.
I doubt we, as a race, will ever see
the ‘whole picture’, The Godhead Design
of ‘peace, and harmony’ – its run amuck.
I doubt the efforts of a few can change
the minds of the enormous many,
without the treasons of emotions murdering
the seasoned thoughts of reason.
How can they not?
I doubt myself.

People, anymore, just say they are getting by,
not too many are happy, per se. The wounds
of continuously peeling scabs of livid, angry
advocates of self-importance rub souls … raw.

(There is a core,
within I,
that could be a better We,
than we…
than me…)

yes, yes and yes...so caught, we are, in a way, yet?
Oh, you've gotten to me with this, erin, it made me stop and think and wonder and so much of what you've expressed so well, here i think lies somewhere within my self, especially of late and YOU have put into words what i think i may feel/think, etc./it's a universal, yet so deeply personal piece and oh, i Thank You...
That core...yes

'a better we'...oh, how you make me think, perhaps there is at least...Hope!?
stunning piece!

this is the really real...and i do think a god has doubts...the old gods of the ancient pantheons certainly did, as did the god of the old testament, who actually called himself jealous, which means that he was full of doubts...so, should we, as gods, be comforted by our doubts, as some indication of our godhood? hmmm...these questions give rise to interesting thoughts, paths to follow and contemplate along the journey of a lifetime...
