I Broke the Pie Plate on Thanksgiving Morning

I woke up way too early.
Not turkey-in-the-oven driven,
Not in seventh heaven,
But, because I had to pee,
I’m getting old, you see.
We had Thanksgiving this last weekend,
With my mother, who’s emphysema-ridden.
We did it all, my girls and me,
The beans and yams and pies,
Thank you, please.
So today, Thanksgiving day,
We are having steak, and twice baked
Potatoes, and non-traditional
Food items. The feeling of thanks
Doesn’t lessen with peas.
I watched Sci-Fi as I computerized,
Shooed the cats out to enterprise
Among themselves. I knew there were
Dishes to do, so I pulled myself
Away from you, it’s my fee, you see.
I loaded the sink and left for a bit,
When I came back, I had to laugh,
The kitten was in the kitchen window
Battling cobwebs caught in Jasmine’s grip,
Whiskers plastered with spidered-seas.
It changed my mood, and I felt quite light,
I bustled about settling the kitchen to rights,
And, while chuckling to myself, I backed
Into countered dishes, and, turning, saw the plate
Falling, sailing free…
I almost caught it with my foot,
But missed the key angle of descent.
It fell to the floor and broke apart, I was
Aghast, but not so much as not to see the humor
Of breaking a pie plate I wouldn’t need
on Thanksgiving morning.
