I saw a cat, dead,
Beside the road,
Almost knowing
It was one of ours.
I saw that cat, dead,
In my mind,
As I quickly ran
To the store.
I saw my cat, dead,
As I stopped,
On the way back.
It wasn’t my cat.
Its eyes were dead.
It was my cat...

poignant read
IMO, this conveys a stirring sense of mystery, suspense, and some degree of identification with the owner of the dead cat, even with the animal itself. Seeing any dead creature on the road disturbs me too. I admire your ability to capture your experience -- you convey a lot of power in these scant few lines.

Stirring write--had a moment of panic and then relief when I read it wasn't yours. Wondering about the dead eyes, though--blind? Excellent.
