A Man Kills What a Man Loves

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Tuesday, May 22, 2007

“A man kills
What a man loves,
Before it weakens him!”

I heard this phrase, tonight,
On a Sci-Fi movie, and,
Buried, I thought, ‘that
Is so write!’

In Historys, Religions,
Pasts and mistakes.
Where have you ever heard:

‘A woman kills
What a woman loves,
Because it strengthens her!’?

I heard myself,
Within reality, voice, tonight,
My indignation! I thought,
‘Men are so weak!’

In ‘Herstorys’, Families,
Hows and new-stakes
Become the future,

Not the past.

I must have followed my instinct and I know I did the right thing! This poem is a revelation. You have taken a sentence heard and it made you think. It came from a Sci-Fi movie, as it could have had another source.
I am used to the this process; I often do it too.

What was a revelation for you has now become a thought-provoking truth for all those who read your poem. Women are not as ambivalent as men; they don't need to possess and destroy what they love.

Politics, religions, science, all the circles that were forbidden to women have served the same purpose. Giving them the illusion of power for fear of being weak. But love is not an illness and weakness can be a form of strength too. I hope more men will understand this in the future.

Greetings,

Axilea

Erin,

“A man kills
What a man loves,
Before it weakens him!”

I think that phrase best be said as such:
"Some men kill
What they love,
Before it weakens them!"

Undoubtedly, "Many men have found their greatest strength in love."
Blessings Always, Paul.

Erin,

The last stanza of Anne Sexton's poem, "Wifebeater" came powerfully to me while reading these lines:

"With a tongue like a razor he will kiss,
the mother, the child,
and we three will color the stars black
in memory of his mother
who kept him chained to the food tree,
or turned him on and off like a water faucet
and made 'women' through all those hazy years
the enemy with a heart of lies.
Tonight all the red dogs lie down in fear
and the wife and daughter knit into each other
until they are killed."

Reality born, lessons learned, from pain, perhaps? It seems so...excellently penned indignation and T R U T H. We hurt the ones we love, why shouldn't we kill them, too? Well done; one of your best.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
