Don’t Speak, Woman

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Thursday, February 21, 2008

Don’t speak, woman, your words are redundancy,
Personified, you offend my life’s eyes,
Turn your display from my sighted decrees,
Words of pleadings extend my seeds-applied.

Lie mute, woman, no words of yours matter in
The Hell of mortal reawareness. Lie
Still, your squirming to be freed proffers sin
As your given position, wreaked awry.

Don’t cry, woman, as we ride your back, deposed,
There is no repose in happiness, no
Lettered-life than the one you live, supposed,
Supplied by the quiet of quid pro quo.

Don’t look to me, woman, your pain is your own,
Your voice is moot to realities grown.

I am so glad I discovered this poem Erin! As long as there are those who project their angst on women instead of looking for a solution within, we will carry this burden. It is therefore our right and duty to produce awareness. Excellent work!

Hi Erin:
Great, well-worded outrage! I think Ted makes some good points. In general and also as the father of three girls, now women making their way in the world, I abhor the history of suppression of women as practiced by many cultures. One of the strongest sources of justification for such behavior in our own culture is our very own Holy Bible. Biblical culture, and religious cultures generally, are of the opinion that women are inferior to men. The Catholic Church does not allow women to serve as priests, etc. As one of many examples of male elitism embedded in religion, let me direct you to just some of the writings of St. Paul.

I Corinthians 14:34-35
34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

One has to wonder why women put up with any institution that would subscribe to and promote such misogynist drivel, especially in this day and age.

This speaks volumes! Powerfully written, and can be truly inspirational in the respect that it is empowering.

Woah - mouth hanging open - the voice of the oppressor, powerfully, vividly conveyed in sonnet form - concur wholeheartedly with Ted, that some, not knowing better? Not having learned? accept/expect such demeaning treatment - my new favorite of yours, Erin, time to throw off the shackles that bind and say "Enough! is enough." Chilling - powerfully penned - empowering, too - well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

In these words, you have caught the deep kernel of the ever-standing issue which has always held women down, whether it be in a burkha or in a lesser-paid professional position. Many great women, in history, have pushed for change and progress. Some have risked or lost their lives in this struggle. And this is a double-edged sword when women accept, even expect, such demeaning treatment. We have, yes, come a long way, but we still have so very far to go.

Ted
