Youngest Sister

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

My youngest sister died, today, May 24, 2008.

Thursday, May 22, 2008

I shared a bed
With my youngest sister,
Growing up. We shared
Foot-warmth, in decades-aged
Wisconsin winters. Shared
Discoveries. Shared memories.
Dying, world-lived. Tomorrow,
Or, another tomorrow,
I will have one sister less.

'Suddenly, it seems, children begin their exodus,
Images of futures and clanging winds, Kelly
Xeroxed copies start to meet their own challenges,
Tinder-zealed souls flow forth, never forgetting
Hearth and Home and Heart.

Precious family baby, beautifully sublime,
Angry tantrums of pampered fertility of mind
Interfered with progress, proceeding past
Go, sharing her care-free spiritedness,
Energy channeled into walking her life’s path....'

Though I do not have a sister, I can understand your pondering as I saw what happens with any others that I know....

Be always safe,
Karen

Sad to contemplate - twin sis and I shared a bed growing up, we were apart 17 years, got back together - sometimes, she crawls in bed with me - don't want to think about loss :( but know it's inevitable - thought provoking - thank you, Erin, well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
