It’s 8:00 pm, right now,
A Friday night. Homecoming
Week is ending in the 'big'
Football game. I have two girls,
Attending, one a senior, one in eighth.
There have been no ‘bangs’, and,
It’s already half-time. Morenci,
A mining town, is so big-small,
Everyone can hear if 'we' score
A touchdown, with fire-worked booms.
I’m watching ‘House’, my
Getting-over-having-a-cold-sick
Husband, hot toddied, fed and tucked
Into bed. I called my oldest, the score
Is 17-0, visitors winning.
My youngest had told me, excitedly,
We were ‘gonna get slaughtered!’
Oh! Wait! I just heard a touchdown!
Now, they are lighting the big ‘M’
On the hill, people are smiling, camcorders
Recording, guess half time is over.
And, maybe the score is 7-17. There’s
No signal for the extra point. Halloween’s
Coming up, and volleyball tournaments
And two graduations and life living…
Its 8:18 pm, right now, still
Friday night, ‘House’ continues,
So does community life, at a football
Game. My girls are there, so is my
Friend, with her husband. Go, Wildcats!
