It’s funny How Things Work Out

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Sixteen years ago,
I rode over the old ‘Guthrie Bridge’,
Unknowingly heading to a mining life.

One child brought, one child born, the only
Bridge bridging Morenci to Safford, through
The Black Hills had no ‘break-down’ shoulders,
Only a foot or two to the bridges rails, its views.
As soon as you left the river-behind, you sharply
Turned left, than right. Being just me, I drove this
Hour-route a thousands times; being the road to the
History of an open-pit mining site, billions have…

Anyway, I could go on about copper-priced life, but,
Really, what I wanted to say was this. The other day,
Monday, President’s Day, my daughters and I traveled
The road to Safford, again. I was driving. They’d been
Building a new bridge for over a year. Almost two. We
35mphred over the old, glancing left to the new, and, it
Seemed ready! The new black-topped soared straight, and
Past the ‘S’ curve of several dead, and near-dead. Road signs
From my side could be read! I knew I was in the throes of a
Historic moment.

We finished our business in Safford, my oldest drove, heading
Back, me, in the Altima’s rear seat, listening to two age-opposite
Teenagers speak a different language than me. I was too keyed
Up to road-doze, and the 35 minutes to reach the bridge were
Interminable, where, sure enough! My daughter drove down the
New-paved road, and, over the new bridge! One of the first few! It
Was one of the most bitterestsweetest moments I’ve ever felt, in an
Intimate/off-hand way. Is this goodbye, or hello? How would you know?

Dear Erin: "Is this goodbye, or hello? How would you know?" You get an I for incomplete as I did in philosophy after arguing for an incomplete on the basis of a continuing thread of incompleteness in all of my endeavors, a paper 'incompleteness and the Romance with Science" and a million other valid illusions to the word "incomplete" that would fill volumes and continue on...
I think today, that was a couple of years ago, I have reduced this phenomenon of incomplet eness, mankind, and science, even the incomplete satire of incompleteness to my school endeavors, myself in my searching to (and fits at all comparisons whether thinking about philsophy, psychology, anthropology, art, that 'obstructed view' is the key word in all frustrations and endeavors; and from a comment in Anthro class..... all things are matters of adjustment-there is no normal state, correct genes, things ust adust to stress and that is what we see when we observe them and (unsoundly)start pointing fingers as to whats wrong (i.e. so and so gene is damaged, abnormal, mutated from what is seen in health) I personally dont think nature produces what we think it does in terms of errors. So I have two important words about things "incomplete" and "obstructed view"- these words arent about things, they are things, the world is always incomplete and there is no total view of anything=mankind, once seeing potential regarding his frustrations makes his own problems as efficiently as if a factory that creates problems. Few'd go running fast in a field of thickets, but a fool, to build a suit to do so, only wear it for good;nature is not rich enough to afford both him a complete outfit and a randomly worn, unscathed path.
