Eyes of Clay or: Mary-Go-‘round

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Friday, May 15, 2009

Okay, I ‘see’ it now. The second
Catarect sugery, two weeks later,
Starts the merry-go-round, of eyes.
Not copper, or kittens or kids or strife,
These are the eyeballs we’re born with.

What went awry, you wonder, as we
All do, genejpwise. Myopic all my lige,
I have no glasses upon my face, tonight.
Instead, I have a ‘distance-contact on
My right eye, a newly-sutured left eye, and
With or without my glasses, I can’t see right!
Right now, I mean, I’m writing with a new pen,
Blindly. But, I know how to form my alphabet,
And, the merry-go-rounds allows foreglimpses.

I understand my sight will get clearer, after all,
Some vision is murky, some is not, before any time
Of facti8on of pulverizing sight. Now, doesn’t that
Go round and round. It isn’t that, though, that dizzies.
I’m eye-impaired, physically looking five ways, or more.
How cool is that! My eyes of clay, melted away, my lenses,
New. I am not.

I can hardly read, or see, what I’ wrote before, and now,
I’m going to ty[pe it up.Did I mention I’m not wearing
Glasses? For ‘the’ firtst time since second-grade? But,
When will all lines of vision come together4…

I don’t know.

I hope they clear the view for you soon but in the meantime it seems you haven't lost your touch of humor and your ability to write.
