Hummingbird Heaven\(Hell)

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Saturday, August 15, 2009

I was happy
My husband put up a
Hummingbird feeder, such
Beautiful creatures. A few hummers
Discovered it that late afternoon/evening.
The next day, the War-of-Their-tiny-worlds
Began. He hung another. It got worse. The sounds
Of angry chittering and tiny bodies slamming into each
Other as quickly disturbed me. Then, I wondered if it mattered,
Surely a hummingbird is the halfway point to the brain of a gnat,
And, the other which way to the brain of a man, that gorgeous mass.
Good thing, Hummingbirds eat gnats. I’d be happy, If my husband
Took the feeders down, but We won’t.. It’s the feeders
That are keeping us happy…

Damned if you don't, damned if you do - they must really like your hummingbird feeders to flock en masse. A neighbor has one up, if we see one a day, we're lucky. Powerfully penned sadness, Erin, well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
