'New Year'

I must take umbrage at ‘New Year’ folly!
Jeez! How presumptuous we are, living.
I’m tired of balms, of holiday-jolly’s!
I want an answer! If it kills somebody!
No. Never. Couldn’t kill. It seems I miss
Another’s thrill. Years come, years go. In place
Of notches, maybe catches can dismiss
The heart repeating without New Year’s kiss.
Still, I can’t force myself into a hide
Produced by plastic waste! I think people
Each have their own new Year! A husband died,
A daughter married, a grandchild born... We-all
Experience a year-in-a-day. Why?
Because we have a body… Auld Lang Syne.
