The Guilt of Inattention

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

*silly tears over a gerbil*

Just abit ago, due to my inattention
to details,
our youngest cat attacked
and probably killed
our newly acquired gerbil,
damn, damn,
I'm usually not that lax...

We'd just gotten a gerbil ball, you see,
but, seems the gerbil
didn't like it much, so
I put gerbil and child
into the tub, and closed the door,
checking every few minutes,
and the Schwan's man came, a day early...

I'ld been laughingly haranguing our ice cream man,
telling him to come back tomorrow,
I was sick, and, by the way,
what did you think
of the poem, "GOD...?"
I gave you to read?,
she came out and asked,
"Where's the ball, mom?",
as we started discussing
the places I'd been,
and the people I'd met,
on my computer...and,
not realizing what I was saying,
I told her, "it's in the hall".

So, I'm talking to a real person, he's fairly new,
and I always make him laugh,
with my raggedy tales of life with children,
and my odd sense of things I see
around me here, in my Copper Community,
and there's a sudden scream, well,
I've heard them before, and,
even as I was raising an eyebrow
at the Schwan's man, I didn't go check,
figuring the rodent had bit her, again...

Not so, to my shocked disbelief,
in a few moments time, the lid had
flown of the ball, the cat had got in
through the door I left open,
the gerbil was bit, the child,
and I, were in tears and Jerry,
the gerbil, was flopping around
in the hall...

In a few moments of time...

Now, the gerbil is kinda laying, and occasionally,
flip-flopping around, the emotions,
between my daughter and I,
thick and sorrowful, my peace of mind, black
with guilt, for a rodent's life,
that was in my care,
is hanging by a thread...

*Mariah feels terrible (she's almost 8), I feel terrible, the cat is frantically trying to get back in the house, can't blame him, tho...*

Sorry to dump this here...had to write it out.

I am not a pet person but I say the cat was just doing what cats do and you did what good writers do and told a good story.

Sympathy to your daughter but the cat was doing what it is supposed to do. Forgive the kitty and yourself.

(((HUGS))) to you and little mariah, and a hiss to the cat...it's no fun to lose a pet, no matter what kind...it's a member of the family...this is so bittersweet and heartfelt...love, karla. :( *tears* my ex killed one of my kittens once, didn't mean to, he was runnin' late for work, pullin' on his pants, the belt was danglin' in the loop...little dipshit (the kitten--not my choice of names, my ex's) saw the belt, jumped up to snag it...and snagged my ex husband's crotch...my ex grabbed the kitten and threw it down...it broke its neck...ooooooh, i was so mad...

Awwwww....I feel for you...when I was a little girl we had a little Joey (baby Kangaroo) anyway one night, one really cold night he got out of the bathmat we'd turned inside out to make a pouch for him....we didn't know and he died of the cold...Dad blamed himself..but it was nobody’s fault. Hugs to your little girl. Dani
