Moon's Gem (Revised)

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Revised Version

Shadows stab and grab at her running feet,
backlit by Moon's kingdom, and it's freedom,
in cloud-clear skies.

She pauses, to gauge the light-intensity
of pale-rose lambient flush upon her path,
over open, uneven ground.

She has erred, wanting to keep the gem's creative powers,
unwilling to return it's vibrant opal beauty
to it's rightful owner.

Fearfully, she scrutinizes the Moon's surface,
intent on any hint of an angrier, punishing color,
silence greets her gaze.

Calculating her chances, tabulating path's obstacles,
she begins to shiver with superstitious dread of tales
of Lady Moon's Damned.

The crytal-sayer had admonished her to comply,
"Return the moongem to Moon's temple by midnight,
or face her punishment."

Clutching the overly-warm gem of inner Moon's glow,
whispering scattered lyrics of protectiveness and comfort,
she pauses for one last thought.

"I wanted only to write an unforgettable love-poem to capture
the love of my life, but, without the moongem's guiding light,
I will be mute and unloved."

In the next instant she flees her cover,
running hard,
glancing over her shoulder at the Moon, seeing...
a change in color!

In her soul she screams for mercy, the purples
and the reds build across Moon's face in a flash,
within a bolt of white!

"Foolish girl, you are now mine", Moon exhales,
sending the colors arrowing to her gem, and
into the girl's mind.

"Thus will you be haunted with My gift of sight,
the Gem is now in your head, forever, achingly, you will be
compelled to write."
