Easter Surprise-Katy's Challenge

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Sunday, April 20, 2003

(Being a little lax,
after 12 years of seasoned unreason,
in getting out, or even finding,
the lummox of a box
of Easter Decorations this year,
I introduced my Muse to
the Mother of Invention,
and we framed up a plan,
sans baskets…)

The forms of eggs I sketched
on paper, pink-edged them
and carefully cut them out,
I made up rhymes to start
the hunt, to map for them
their Easter Day Treasure route.

“Look to the sound
of water going round”,
is what the first one said,
they rushed to the table fountain,
still frowzy with sleep and
with tousled heads.

The next silly clue was read,
“Did you know that
there’s a clue under the hat?”,
they looked about, unsure,
but saw it quickly, sitting
on the colored Easter placemat.

Now, Rocher hazelnut chocolates
wrappers were emptied, and replaced
with a Hershey’s kiss and a hint, haha
their faces were perplexed as they read,
“Oops, Daddy got hungry,
check out the medicine chest!”

Wrapped in tissue and ribbon-tied,
were Malted Milk Ball eggs, my favorite,
under which came their next easy clue,
“This place is too small to hide anything good,
go look into the fridge.”,
they took off right on cue!

Jolly Roger jellybeans in plastic eggs
proudly sat on a shelf with names,
pink-edged hint beneath them said,
“Though these eggs are yummy there is more,
go look at the irises out the front door.”,
and to the outside, they fled.

One in a yellow bloom and one in purple,
two last eggs did wait, this one stumped
them a little bit, I am not sure why…
“You will find your Easter surprise
in the place where you ride.”, and they thought,
as the sun shone above in the deep blue sky.

The light bulb went on with a weakly twist,
“The truck?”, my younger one guessed,
that’s all it took to start the race,
but it was to the Tahoe, where did await,
two large stuffed bunnies of purple and pink,
in each of their sitting places!

:) It's a little rough, may need some finer tuning later...

Amazing! Hilarious! AND I was moved... don't touch it, Erin.. it's perfection as is.. I loved the word "frowzy".. hehehe.. and I melted ~sigh~ to read "Jolly Roger".. for it's what my sweetie goes by in his email addy.. (giggle). You are truly able to 'write-on-demand' and I sincerely thank you for this huge grin I'm wearing.. simply marvelous! katy.
