Star Forgave Me

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Saturday, August 23, 2003

I saw a star come falling down,
I hurried to pick it up.
Tears ran sparkling over my hands,
I couldn’t believe my luck!
“This star,” I mused, “will ever shine,
I’ll put it in a crown!”
“I’ll feed it words and hear its voice
and write its feelings down!”

So star and I, we shared a cage,
and never looked around.
The days rolled past and age set in,
star shined less 'being-proud'.
It reflected my life of inner strife
and never gave me peace.
Soon all I could see when I looked at me
was a selfish human beast.

I saw a star come falling down,
I hurried to set it free.
I couldn’t stand how sanctimonious
I had come to be.
Tears ran sparkling over my hands
as I launched star towards the sky.
The freedom released our loneliness,
wisdom will never die.

Dear Erin-I first encountered your poetry when you reviewed my poetry in poem train. The first of your poems I read "she never though to read a poem"(Idont remember the name right now off hand of the piece)-but I have reflected on this poem since and even named a disease I call feather blindness and have found outthat some women from the caribean after mating start to become coarse/callous and that an iron looking deposit develops in the female after a while. THis is also my first encounter with anyone with any testimony of these certain things that involve some struggles I have with such a female(s)? described.(belived just briefly encountered at a school lecture)(Hunter College NYC"why does he have a fellowship and I dont?".-she was an undergraduate and not eligeable -no one ast the seminar could reason with her-every time I encountered her she made a physical reference to me(smile?-hostile?-I can't read minds. appears to have beentalkimg to someelse not present and looking at me. was 1979.) Belive some sort of fad/fraud with computers school advertising etc started in my life about this time and my life full of strange coincidences and mystery(unmet twin, gravestone with my name on it,constant to totally unreasonable attention from police doctors etc i could barely recognize looking back as exactly out of the ordinary and making no sense-my replies never matched the approachers topic -meaning heard -like ten thousand(as many approaches) shakespeare comedies-and would not have know another transient would not have the same experience and the country and people not the same as I expereienced /perceived.
I think partly at the bottom of this is the differece in color between yellow and blue-like a yellow songbird and a blue song bird-blue moon electrical glow in the snow when I went out to see Marty Hoffman to find his address label (the type from a return address on a n envelope i neve notivced on his door in the basement of his mothers house). The wind was blowing and howling and Iknocked on marty"s door-a blue glow as over the sky and in the snow. Marty did not answer and the house seemed empty and cold from my knock. I heard the snow plow near the Kmart- and later came to know a crime was committed that involved theft of the (now hidden snow plow) and maybe the blue electrical glow. Sometimes over the years anf my travels I'd see all kinds of birds=old lone robbins breaking rank with more ordinary birds-sparrows-small pedigree looking blue birds
land from nowhere nearby me-yellow song birds-pidgeons sometimes perched on my bedding on the ground as I slept in foreign states and unfamiliar places-unusual ocean swells from my knee to chest in the pacific and not the atlantic. Normally very shy animals casually approaching me, walk over my feet etc birds perched no more than a foot away sometimes looking in my eyes as if to say something.
Words seemed added to my life -looking back as if all the parties in my conversations know another not myself, a very line difference in description, recently seemed in converstion with persons sounding threatening, bullying, cowing, mean maybe demanding respect, and persons eyes not actually upon me as I talk any longer. Subltle movements ignored by most peoiple as reflex because it is not important to them, prominently catching my attention with all these encounters.

A commentary written in pure gold, dear Erin! We all sparkle brightest when we allow other's to sparkle too.. in whatever ways they do.. how can we feel free if others are not. Breathtaking, this! love, katy xox.

Giving your star wings also gave your spirit real love. Nothing shines when it is levied.

Great thought in a beautiful poem.
