Strange Mixtures

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Sunday, August 31, 2003

Our earth enfolds the universe.
Unusual combinations.
Exotic conglomerations.
Singular associations.
All interwoven with what we perceive
as reality. Strange mixtures…

A gnat’s brain engrained with short survival
multiplies its populations propensity
to integrate the world.

Inexplicable synthesis.
Remarkable composites…

A spore separated from indifferent underleaf,
holds its kernelled life indefinitely
awaiting its moment of birth.

Fantastic amalgams.
Surprising fusions…

A glob of protoplasms unite in victory
thrives under pressurized depths of seas
garnering existence unknowingly.

Extraordinary mergers.
Unusual blends…

A feathered skeleton with binocular sight
exercises its penchant to decry
the galactic idiom of gravity.

Unconventional mélanges.
Queer hodgepodges…

A mammoth heart with memoried mind
uses a misleading appendage with gentle intent
combining tensile touch, and life's breath.

Peculiar fusions.
Curious jumbles…

A blended race with elusive superiority
creates fluctuations within infinity
while limited in profounded localities.

Our minds enfold the universe.
Unaccountable potpourris.
Eccentric multiplicities.
Bizarre assortments.
All interweaving into what we perceive
as reality. Strange mixtures…

Erin.. you are so talented at internal rhymes (2nd verse) and alliteration.. so natural, never sounds forced for the sake of poetry.. I just marvel at the way you use even the most familiar words.. you own them! Great poem! love, katy xox.

dear erin ;You are becoming a biology/science observer/perception expert. I liked the poem enough that a lecture raced to my head. (I have given and written lectures all over the country where ver zi had a plce to stand and was incited enough by contradiction and unfairness.

Marvin
To my mind there are two factors in mans comprehension of the universe 1) that each man lives in a unique microcosm different from eachother.
2) that the world cannot only be described as as a container and its contents, but philosophically, from the theoretical outside, that is what it and everything within it(HEARTS MINDS THOUGHTS SOULS BODIES) is--the existance of a container(a very old one with all kinds of hodge plodges). Each step in evolution has to pass a reality testing test -if a species survives, it has passed and knows reality to survive. Reality does not contain part of a circle-if a part of a circle is discovered a whole circle exists. I had a professor who stated no one can define the limits of reality(if you had been a student around Hopkins in downtown baltimore he could have been refering to an aurea borialis mixed in with a solar eclipse and oscillating mental depression whose diagnosis definition and treatment had been passed on to a high funding high priority psychiatric research center seting out to define reality. Apparently the doctor had been shortcut and shortchanged by definition. The two professions did not aways get along.

Back to the topic -it is not always that things mix by multiplication to give all the possible combinations, but that everything thing that is is always born as a whole circle whether together at one place or totally observeable at the same time = and a reality test passer.

Correction on my response:

A thought-provoking poem, Erin. Is reality revolves around the earth as it spins on its own around the sun? How much depth is considered as reality? It is quite scary when my thoughts wander off to the universe vast "unlimited" space. (the word should have been unlimited instead of limited)

Why and how do we define reality?...as I often thought that we are so small...not even a dust of the universe...and we the humans have "realities"?????

It is quite scary!!!!!

Wonderful thought-provoking write. This is a deeeeep poem to explore.
