Behind a Suicide

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Wednesday, January 7, 2004

Behind the mask of a human face
a suicide peers out with agonized fears;
not knowing how to stop
the drip, drip, drip
of cascading thought…
don’t want to be caught.

Behind the laugh on a suicide’s lips
a stifled gasp pleads don’t look and see
the madness leaking
from soggy sieve
of cascading prayer…
who would care?

Behind the gleam of slightly crazed eyes
reality becomes a patch worked lie;
they all will know
the roaring ache
of cascading pain…
go out with a bang!

Behind the death of a suicide’s life
is a selfish chance to make worlds cry,
a justification of sad mistake;
the memory wanes
in cascading time…
a senseless crime.

Suicide is a cop-out, I know, I have tried it and I thank God that I pulled out of that dark place that tried to suck me in. For me, there was a line; life on one side death on the other. I chose death but it did not choose me and I am grateful. This is a well painted picture of the process. TY for reminding me that I'll never go there again. On a lighter note Happy New Year Erin. :)

Love, Janet xoxoxo

glimmers of suicide filter through all of us, unfortunately some cannot control the urge ... Buddha said, "a wise man neither seeks nor avoids death."

My dear Erin.. there's personal experience wrapped into my reading and commenting here... and you've managed to find that unique voice in this writing.. you go where others fear to look.. you expose, yet make the exposure gentle enough for even the saddest eyes to look and nod, knowing that you captured what is there, in the places we conveniently pretend aren't there. How amazing.. the difference between what's seen and what's behind what we see. You are truly a student of our very human beings. Your writing, perhraps the best there is like this, is unflinching! A camera and our eyes see the facade... your mind and words create the truthful depths. What a write! love, katy xox. (Jaysus.. it's good to be back!)

I felt the pain in this excellent write... you have touched on one side of suicide and expressed it honestly and with much heart,you have touched me deeply with this poem.Congratulations on highlighting tis subject.I read Ed Matlack's comment and could in part relate to it and he touched me with his honesty.I have lost two friends (one close,one just social)as they suffered depression,hardship and inability to cope with their life's load.One of them I expected would finally 'end' things (I expected it as they had tried to so often,) the other I knew was unhappy but didn't expect them to take their life,that one was a shock for me.I still, after many long years ,think of them both,senseless?yes,it is ,and so,so,very sad.In the early eighties due to many personal problems (real ones) I attempted it too (to 'end' things)and I ended up in intensive care,and then hospital,for me, anti depressants didn't work (had opposite effect in fact)so I eventually tossed them all out and thank God I found courage to change my life,left the unhappy things,got better.(That's approx.20 years ago now. )
I am guilty of a crime...attempting suicide...it's on the police files,I attempted suicide,I guess I am a criminal,it is a misdermina in this country,and so a crime,I don't think it should be but it is.I nowdays look at the funny side of that and think to myself 'what would the cops have done to me if I had of succeeded in my 'big crime',jail me for life?given me 'the chair? hung me?Ha ha ha.Yes it's silly really!Folks that want to die aren't criminals,they are sick,the mind crumbles just as the bones do,the mind can break too just as bones and it can also heal just as bones do.Society needs to see suicide and the attempts at it, as more of an illness and less as a crime,it's a deep but agonizing silent cry for help,it is societie's treatment of suicide attempters and its victims that is The real Crime.
I applaud your poem,more people need to be vocal about this subject,thank you for allowing me the chance to do so too.

How true that we cannot see behind a suicide's eyes, but if we are vigilant, maybe we can see some signs. We can only hope.

(((erin)))

suicide is not the answer...it leaves family members reeling with unimaginable, unending grief, leaving them blaming themselves and wondering what they could have done to change things

powerful, heartbreaking read--well done

Suicide is possibly one the worst crimes one can commit. It leaves everyone else half dead with sorrow. Well penned, Erin.

Suicide is senseless to everyone else, but to the person planning it, it seems the ONLY thing to do at that moment...Have come close in the past, fortunately they now make anti-depressants! A emotionally dark write, Erin, and one that I think alot will identify with...Peace, ED & rufuz

Erin, you have captured the thoughts and emotions painfully accurate. In my book I had 3 characters who shared this common thread and I struggled with them to put their thoughts into words. Once again you have done an excellent write.

Erin, a very thought provoking write. There are many arguements that can be brought up with the subject. I view suicide as not an option or a solution to a problem but as a disease, as is drug adiction or alcohlism. Very well written piece.

at the time one attempts suicide, one rationalizes with themself, that losing everything important, not in a material sence, that it is the final option..
