Contemporary Mind versus Classical Muse

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Tuesday, January 13, 2004

The mind of Man magnificent begot
The Muses marvelous; no Gods of lore
As finely coutured melodious plot
Of mindly knots as Man’s need to abjure

Early sense of defense against his mind.
Manned by kind, ungainly head, the dread
Of failure demised, unwise; intertwined
With Then’s beliefs. Relief of blame, instead

Of strength in width of mind, designed a plan
To fault blank moments of inner worlds seen;
Fright of delight in poetic might can
Distort the peace, musing, our minds demean.

Made Muse versus Man’s mind, you’ve forgotten,
Time grows and erases what once was when.

Well Erin, at first I saw the name of this poem and thought to myself I will have to open my dictionary again, LOL! Well I was certainly right, you always make me learn new words with your writes...may have to agree with Leland here as well...excellent Erin, thanks.

Our creative mind conjures up such elaborate and beautiful explanations and justifications for its wanderings in its own echoing space. who can I blame if not my muse. lol, myself! horrors!

ok, sweet potato.. 6 readings! count em.. and I'm still convinced that what you wrote and what I absorbed may be very different.. ah well.. it spoke to me, though sometimes it spoke backwards... it had to, you see, because it is, to me, a journey back, then forward, then back again... The mind races ahead, then luxuriates in dwelling in the past, a place far too open to regret and to guilt.. we indulge ourselves to think that we can change or alter that which was... of course, we cannot... but the beauty and the wisdom that is our mind sometimes calls a halt and this minute, right now, becomes clear as crystal and we realize that forward is the only direction we have... and if we listen, we begin to move... glancing back is so human.. stepping into the future is where the real drama is... God, Erin.. this truly spoke to me but I can't be sure we wrote/read the same poem... I just know that this piece will last longer than the time it took to read it... Wonderful! love, katy xox.

Erin,
Strong voice in this piece! And
I really like the title also.
It read like an incantation,
very cool!

Maria
