Fractured Eyes

by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen — Read all 1,670 poems by Erin Elizabeth Kelly-Moen

Sunday, January 25, 2004

Where comes the view blind eyes portray? Does sight
declined absolve a fervored mind? Same eyes
refuse to stop the voice of hate’s delight
in wringing tears of pain with friendly guise.

Where comes the mirror aimed inside? Does glass
repaned and silver-blacked incite despair
for humankind? The ache of voices mass
behind the mirror of free choice. Where laired

are Mans expanded eyes? Does damaged past
not reach nor actions teach us how to view
same lessons learned; retaining what should last,
reflecting hard won truths as sight imbues

the earth with fractured births of mirrored eyes.
Can fusion of the pieces make us wise?

I thought when I read this the true statement, "the eyes are the window to the soul." When considering the actual anatomy of the human eye itself, your poem to shows that our perceptions are the lens that gets dry from lack of internal moisture (human compassion shared freely) and the aqueous humor in front of the lens (as protection from despair of the hate that fractures the lens, and creates distorted images that fall thru the pupil. When that happens, I see the retina becoming detached because of the agony in the world, damaged beyond repair. Then the entire force of love is detached by the darkness in the soul; and the soul is lost.

Thank you for this "reflection" Erin.

The fusion of pieces once shattered can only leave us with arms akimble and head spinning like a top. If this is a mirror in our mind - and we shatter it - we can never be the same again. Once we
put it together again, who knows what will happen. Sometiems insanity? Very deeply written Erin and each one who reads it can dig up a different answer. Bill

Infite questions are answerable only in our infinite capacity for human compassion. You have some very complex ponderings. Erin, I love reading you! -- Jeff
