The Man Who Wanted Too Much

Well, he went to work every morning.
He was a prisoner of his fate.
But he didn't really want to be there
so he often went in late.

He had once enjoyed what he was doing
and his life was not such a chore,
but then the idiots took over the world
and nothing made sense anymore.

So he just sat there in his cubicle
day after day after day,
and he felt that his life was wasted
and he wished that he could get away.
And he dreamed up ways of escaping
but something always made him stay.
He couldn't do what he wanted.
He was the man who wanted too much.

Yes, he was the man who wanted too much.
He wanted to see, to feel, and to touch.
And he could never be happy.
He was the man who wanted too much.

He wished he could've been a rock star.
That's all he'd ever wanted to be.
To travel the world making music.
There were so many places to see.

And he wanted his own flock of groupies
who would follow him wherever he'd go
and tell him that he was wonderful
and be good to him after the show.

But he had a wife and a family
and he knew he had a job to do,
and every other song reminded him
that he had promised to be true .
So he went to work every morning
and every song that he wrote was blue.
He couldn't be what he wanted.
He was the man who wanted too much.

Yes, he was the man who wanted too much.
He wanted to see, to feel, and to touch.
And he could never be happy.
He was the man who wanted too much.
No, he could never be happy.
He was the man who wanted too much.

He was married to a beautiful woman
and he brought her flowers and such,
and she was very happy to get them
and she loved him very much.

He had always been a man of passion
and his heart was filled with desire, 🦋
and though she'd always really loved him
she didn't always feel the fire.

So he dreamed of finding someone
who would love him like he loved her.
Though he knew he could never betray her
he sometimes wasn't so sure.
He had always tried to do the right thing
but his heart was never too pure.
He couldn't have what he wanted.
He was the man who wanted too much.

Yes, he was the man who wanted too much.
He wanted to see, to feel, and to touch.
And he could never be happy.
He was the man who wanted too much.
No, he could never be happy.
He was the man who wanted too much.
No, he could never be happy.
He was the man who wanted too much.

Are people unhappy because they cannot have what they want,
or because they want what they cannot have?

I spend my life in a cubicle
surrounded by five foot pastel walls.
I sit in my chair and stare into a cathode ray tube.
My desk is cluttered with papers,
and a coffee cup that's never been washed.
I never do anything that I haven't done sometime before.
But I dream I'm up on a stage somewhere
with a spotlight on my hair.
Playing my piano. Singing my heart out.
