Once I ran away from home.
The first visions of a square world,
Edge to fall over,
Needling me like my persistent big brother,
He at 16, insisting
That we could make good our getaway.
Once I was lost at sea,
A world of salt-water engulfing me.
Typhoons dredging up horrific visions,
Circling sharks and sailors loading bombs,
Seasick with migraines and insomnia,
This Darkness refusing to abandon
A military carrier of toxic dreams.
Once I was torn asunder.
Aching heart hit with wrecking ball.
The collapse of a hard-built love,
Immanent.
Cracks revealed, structural faults detected,
My own children pinned in the wreckage,
For Christ’s sake!
Once I was bound by fate.
Bad health trussing me up like a sacrificial dove,
Wings clipped, heart beat failing,
Nothing to look forward to but time…
…time for regret, time for remorse, time for pain.
We all bear our share of scars.
The deepest cuts
Tend to sever emotional arteries,
Ah, but to consider what waste you might have made of the life before all of this. You are a poet, seeing things clear and precise because of the very obstacles you had to overcome. Rejoice!!!!!!!!
Brutal, Michael. So personal and triumphantly sad. What can one expect from a square world. To live is to die. Well done!

This is an excellent poem from you, my friend... one to read and reread... I'll be back to butt my head up against this stonewall-sizzle of a spectacle. Terrific work, Michael.
