ALVORADA: screenplay for music video-

Fade in from black:

The time is just before morning. The camera is flying over dark ocean waves. On the horizon we see a dark mass of mountains in the far distance. In between the mountains and the ocean is a tiny pinprick of light.

It is the city of Rio de Janeiro.

As the camera approaches the city, it slows down. It passes over the beach and into the city, showing people on the streets going to work, preparing to open their shops, sweeping the sidewalks, etc.

The camera rises up over the buildings as the sky gets lighter and everything becomes more visible. The Christ statue at Corcovado is seen in the background. The camera flies towards the steep hillsides behind the city, focusing in on one little white building that has a wide porch. On the porch is an empty couch with a chair right beside it.

The camera slowly flies through the open door of the porch, through the house to dimly lit bedroom. On the bed is a tiny black man, shriveled, sick and helpless. A beautiful young woman enters the room with a huge burly man and she pulls back the blankets and directs the big man to pick up the little man, who is carried out to the porch and laid tenderly on the couch.

The young woman arranges the body of the little man into a comfortable position so that he can watch the sunrise. The sky gets brighter. As the sun begins to appear, she sits in the chair and we can see that she is crying. The old man begins to sing, at first to her, and then to the sun itself.

It is his last sunrise…..

ALVORADA by Cartola, Carlos Cachaça and Hermínio Bello de Carvalho, new words by Joel Sattler

New title: “The Death of Cartola”

At the daybreak on a hillside over Rio

Don’t weep, no one else here is crying

On this beautiful morn

The sun making colors oh so pretty oh so pretty

You have to feel so sorry for people in cities

At the daybreak on a hillside over Rio

Don’t weep, no one else here is crying

On this beautiful morn

The sun making colors oh so pretty oh so pretty

You have to feel so sorry for people in cities

You know that you remind me

Of one iridescent dawning

Look at me now

I’m not what I have been

Now I’m a mere shadow

Thinking back on all I’ve done and know I ought to be

Walking, down the long road to forever

(In the morning)

At the daybreak on a hillside over Rio

Don’t weep, no one else here is crying

On this beautiful morn

The sun making colors oh so pretty oh so pretty

You have to feel so sorry for people in cities…..

Original lyrics in Portuguese:

Alvorada lá no morro, que beleza

Ninguém chora, não há tristeza

Ninguém sente dissabor

O sol colorindo é tão lindo, é tão lindo

E a natureza sorrindo, tingindo, tingindo

(a alvorada)

Alvorada lá no morro, que beleza

Ninguém chora, não há tristeza

Ninguém sente dissabor

O sol colorindo é tão lindo, é tão lindo

E a natureza sorrindo, tingindo, tingindo

Você também me lembra a alvorada

Quando chega iluminando

Meus caminhos tão sem vida

E o que me resta é bem pouco

Ou quase nada, do que ir assim, vagando

Nesta estrada perdida.

Alvorada lá no morro, que beleza

Ninguém chora, não há tristeza

Ninguém sente dissabor

O sol colorindo é tão lindo, é tão lindo

E a natureza sorrindo, tingindo, tingindo

Alvorada in Brazil, Madrugada in Argentina, a time before the malignity awakes, before the sun yawns, before the stupid worm is out to be taken by the early bird...
