THE SAME OLD BLUES, song lyrics by Joel Sattler

[The final verse is 14 bars instead of  12]

Woke up in the evening

With my head full of rocks

I went to play your special

But the jukebox was locked

I went to get your mama

But she was on the roof

I went to tell your daddy

But he asked me for proof

I went to smell your sister

But she was cooking eggs

I went to ask your brother

But he tried to make me beg

Nobody will tell me

What I need to know

They only want to tell me

Where the hell to go

But if I knew that answer

I wouldn’t have to try

I wouldn’t even have

To ask the reason why

But I’ll ask you baby

What else should I do?

Or should I keep on singing

The same old blues?

So I went to the market

To try to get some beer

I told them what I needed

Guess I didn’t make it clear

They notified police

Wouldn’t listen what I say

The man said I should beat it

Or they’d take my ass away

I said but Mr. Copper

I’m looking for a friend

They shoved me out the door

I was on the street again

Went running down the sidewalk

Crossed against the light

The milkman knocked me down

But I said I was alright

I tried to find a telephone

But they were obsolete

And wouldn’t then you know it

The rain turned into sleet

So please tell me baby

What else can I do?

Or should I keep on singing

The same old blues?

I tried to find a barroom

That wasn’t only men

I ended up imbibing

With a bunch of lesbians

They thought me cute and funny

And accepted me as straight

I looked down at my watch

And realized that I was late

I ran out to the Brooklyn Zoo

Although it’s wet and cold

I dodged the kangaroos

And jumped down a rabbit hole

I was falling for forever

Felt like I was growing old

Then just about that time

I thought that it couldn’t matter

I found myself at tea

With the Dormouse and Mad Hatter

You may think that I am crazy

You may think that it’s a sin

But at least unlike the Cheshire Cat

I’m more than just a grin

So you got to tell me baby

What else can I do?

Or should I keep on singing

These same old blues??????
