AINT I A WOMAN 2nd version,
words by Sojourner Truth,
with some adaptions and additions by Joel Sattler
So much racket!
Must be something out of kilter!
That man over there
says women need help
helped into carriages,
Lifted over ditches,
and have the best place
everywhere!
Well, nobody helps me
and AINT I A WOMAN???!!!???
Look at me!
Look at my arm!
I've ploughed and planted
Sown and reaped and gathered into barns!
Aint I a woman?
Come on and tell me true ?
Aint I a woman?
Mister what I'm telling you
I can work as hard
And long as any man!
Borne thirteen children
seen them sold from the land
I shed my tears
and bore up best as I can.
Aint I a woman?
I'm good as any man.
And when I cried
With a mother's grief
There's none but Jesus
Who could give me relief.
I work as hard
And eat as much as a man
I could bear the lash
And at end of day
on two feet I stand!
Aint I a woman?
Aint I a woman?
When the day is done
and we stand in the sun
Aint I a woman?
As good as anyone
Aint I a woman?
Proud of what I have done
No man could head me
No man could try
They beat me down
But I got back up and try
I will not
just lay down and die!
Aint I a woman?
You know I got my pride.
Aint I a woman
Aint I a woman
Aint I your equal,
friend and lover
Aint I a woman
I won't run for cover
Aint I a woman?
That what you should discover.
When Eve was made
she was the first
She turned the world around
upside down
And set Man
right back on Earth
Aint I a woman
I'm your bestest friend
Give me your hand
and together we will win again
Aint I a woman?
Aint I a woman?
When the day is done
and we stand in the sun
Aint I a woman?
Proud of what I done
Aint I a woman?
Aint you a mother's son?

Reviews of "AINT I A WOMAN by Sojourner Truth, 2nd version"
Ain't that the truth! There's a woman here in Houston who works at the Buffalo Soldier Museum. She often plays Sojourner Truth… Quite well… I might add.
