in the morning he woke up under a bridge
and cooked up some coffee beside a cold stream
and tried to remember the pieces of dream
like a broken mirror in his mind
he looked at the mountains that clutched at the sky
looked out on the meadow he slept in last night
rolled up his bag and walked into the light
and down to the highway to bum a ride
and the day started cold but turned into an oven
like ten million days here in Texas have done
from green Texarkana to dusty El Paso
900 miles in the hot blazing sun
that was only the middle of a coast to coast run
Atlantic Pacific and not the first one
some men have to travel a long way to come
to find to what they have been blind
home is the place
where they open the door
no matter the past
no matter what for
a hot cup of tea
and some butter and bread
and a pillow
to rest your head
home is the point
in the center of life
with children and puppies
and a goodly wife
it seems oh so simple
but really is not
the once place
you never forgot
they say California is honey and milk
and red wine as smooth as the finest of silk
but he knew that the stories don't always come true
but there's nothing else that he can do
just as every man comes to the end of his rope
even at bottom still won't give up hope
there must be a meaning there must be more
somehow his faith to restore
home is the place
where they open the door
no matter the past
no matter what for
a hot cup of tea
and some butter and bread
and a pillow
to rest your head
home is the point
in the center of life
with children and puppies
and a goodly wife
it seems oh so simple
but really is not
the once place
you never forgot
