I like this song, although I think it's always dangerous when a man writes like he thinks a woman would.
I was joking around in the office and calling out to two "gals" who worked there while I was helping make it easier for them to do the hard customer service jobs they had. Finally, one day, Barbara called me aside and told me that she "hated" that word, because it had been used a lot by the Jim Crow South to belittle black women.
While I was from the North and had used the word all my life, as well as hearing women around me use it, like "guys and gals," in a rather innocuous way, I stopped using that word in the office and things got a lot better for me when it came to working with women.
