I opened up the door to the cab
and paid God to take me to where she was standing
with her arms all folded up and she so demanding
looking for all the world like a mascared spider crab
He said here is the station buddy and then departed
she walked through the gateway chanting my my my
but I couldn't grab her because my hands were tied
so I tried to tell her why but I could not get started
her heart was a card that a blind man could play
the singer won the uptown eyes and then she bailed
the train pulled out of Kankadee the gandies all were jailed
the night threw me down and I finally got laid
I refused to have it handily but maybe I was lazy
the phone was ringing off the hook my memory was hazy
and like a Zapatista she went over upsie daisy
nobody came to rob me they all thought I must be crazy
gimme a dime
gimme a dime
a quarter would be fine
or just gimme a sign
any time now any time
and so without a chorus I went wailing in the morning
I tried to kiss her anyway she said what the hell was that for
I said it's just for luck she bought a ticket up to Stratford
and Shakespeare slapped me up the head not giving me a warning
gimme a dime
gimme a dime
you don’t have to do the time if you don't do the crime
if you wanna go to bed you’ll have to get in line
a nickel aint a pickle
just gimme just a dime
