D=Day + sixty years twelve days. The jingoism, and the hype have gone, the captains and the kings departed. All that is left is the sea, the sand and the sacrifice. That and the a feeling that we really haven't changed much ...

from out of the storm
the storm came.

young men with guns
confronting young men
with guns confronting .

it is a much told the tale
of the beaches of normandy
how evil was driven out
liberation won
and peace restored
but 'tis a lie.
o, 'tis true that
the seawall was breached
the objective gained
the enemy defeated.
a great battle was fought
the great battle was won
but the greater war goes on.
as long as there are scapegoats ,
be they jew or nazi or arab ,
to cast our sins upon,
evil will entrench and
young men with guns
will confront each
across the sea wall

sixty years on
the beach is quiet, still,
and naught comes from the sea
but the eternal wind and
the measured tide.
