another artifact
another memory

I found it last night in a
box of stuff
a bit dusty
but comforting still
my old tobacco pipe.

tobacco
is a dirty word these days.
pipe smoking did have its drawbacks:
ashes everywhere
morning mouth,
odd tasting coffee
holes in jacket pockets,
pipes to clean

but the tactile experience
filling the pipe--
the lighting it,
getting a uniform burn,
fondling the pipe,
long after the need
or desire
for smoke had passed,
comforted me then as now.

I polished it up
and set it on my desk
probably never to smoke
but memories cling to it
like the char in its bowl
so there it will stay

John, I have a sudden urge to send you a pack of my aromatic tobacco. I am sure your memories of those precious 'pipe times' are as soothing as the beautiful verse you wrote. I am a pipe smoker too and I find it as elegant as poetry writing itself.

Cheers
A.S.

The sense of smell is probably one of the most powerful forces in eliciting memories. Well done, John. Love and peace. Regis

I enjoyed this John. There's something peaceful and calming about pipe tobacco aroma and the sight of a man sitting quietly while engaged in smoking his pipe; the atmosphere is almost sacred! Well done!

Yes it is nostalgic and some men held a pipe in their mouths I think sometimes to give an sophisticated air like Norman Rockwell. I have some pipes that are works of art and never smoked on. Pipe tobacco has a different smell than cigarette because of the difference in the plants and their aromatic flavoring.
