It was a requirement when I was in scouts
to know the points of the compass . . .

Alternatively when a sail vessle is poorly handled dhe is sad to box the compass as her head searched for a heading, rather than steering a true course

Boxing the compass

North,
North northeast, Northeast, East Northeast,
East
East southeast, Southeast, South southeast
South
South southwest, South West, West southwest,
West,
West northwest, Northwest, North northwest,
North

Box the compass to sixteen points.

Box the compass
learn
its intricacies
box the compass to thirty-two points.

learn its nuances.

West, west west northwest, west northwest, North west Northwest, Northwest, west north northwest, north northwest, North north northwest. . .

Nuances lost on a generation
who can't read roads signs
let alone maps.
not to mention
the times and the seasons
Intricacies and nuances of
time and of distance
box the compass
to one hundred twenty-eight points…
it can be done.

Box the compass,
learn its intricacies and nuances.
Tell directions with a watch.
Walk to compass
orient yourself
to your maps will,
to your world
encompass yourself

Intricacies and nuances,
intricacies
and
nuances
lost

OK, John, you're the guy I'm gonna stick with when I get totally lost in life and don't even HAVE a watch! Brownies honour! :)) Neat write, John, and, once a scout, always a scout, I reckon! TY Kate xx

lol and i'm a geographer, was a boy scout, and can't hardly remember anything. a great piece, to remind us that the mores of generations are held in common, and when they change, it is barely noticeable...except to those with eyes wide...

I am so ashamed, compasses confuse me no end. (laffin) I openly admit that I am geographically challenged. I love the place where I live now. The mountain is east and the mesa is west...I can always find my way back home.
Take care,
Sherry

I personally can't travel without a map as I have the worst sense of direction in the world. I know East, early in the morning, and West at sundown; other than that, pleaese give me a map. Good offering, John!

I ask guys at work: "Why do you need a GPS unit when you have maps and can at least tell direction, not to mention the fact that you never go out of the small chunk of the world we live in...?" I would rather use maps and I use my directional compass in my Jeep regularly and I carry an old compass with me at all times...never know...well written example of a world gone to the electronic dogs...everyone wants the easy way...enjoyed the memories, Ed & Rufuz
