Snow ride

The snow lies warm close upon the tired earth,
the steps of the mules are muffled by
the silencing white.

Red is glad for the work today;
lazing around the paddock
with a giddy bunch of ponies
is really not his style. Ponies
are such dull gossips' to a mule
who has walked the paths of the sun
and the earth and the sea.
Rip, your mount, tolerates ponies
better than Red --
actually they leave him alone
he bit one once.

This path is magical tonight, although
it leaves not these fields that we know.
A few crystals pf water has changed the known world. The snow has made strange places we know so well.
The boat house, over there, is a faerie castle.
The woods are alive with possibilities;
the lane leads no longer to the pasture,
but to a land of trappers and traders,
Mounties and enchanted beasts.
Nothing is as it seems down there
nothing is as it was -- all is changed
by the muffling, magical snow.

The mules aren’t fooled by any of this—
hoping only for a good rubdown, some oats
and a bottle of stout. . .

Ah! Lovely. Very remarkable in its peculiar, very special kind of poetry.

You are right. Snow magically alters the reality that was there before it fell. Thank you, John. Love and peace.

I will take a bottle of stout as well if you please...;) This is an enjoyable romp thru the snow from a mules point of view, though they seem pretty stuck up not wanting to associate with the horse's...LOL! Ed
