I finger the ragged edge of the strake
routine winter maintenance turned up
a spot of rot by the keel. Nothing
serious just take out the effected boards,
and a brace of ribs, replace with new
wood. The ribs came from that big
branch that blew off the Kelly’s oak two
years ago. The cedar from the swamp down by
Jack’s place. Not many trees go down
in the district that Harvey, the boatwright,
doesn’t know about and get a piece of,
“Getting harder”, Harvey says to me, ”what
with the damned developers taking them
down by the acre.” I grunt in reply
as we watch the two apprentices working
on a trio of flatirons. After a bit I ask. “Those
row boats don’t look “right”.” Harve laughs.
“You caught me. They’re an old pattern of
m’dad’s. A little narrow for their length ---
for speed. Bit more freeboard, to boot.
They’re for the sailing club. Big gaff rig.”
We wandered out to parking lot, “I
brought you seven pair of oars, owe ya eight
on the season.” ”Right. I’ll need another
six pair, as well.” “Done” say I.
