Down the road we go
Dark, dark road to somewhere--
Down the dark road
Going nowhere.

We see what we pass as we pass.
WE remember what lies behind.
The road ahead is darkness dark.
without mile post, marker, or sign.

We have neither lamp nor torch
to pierce the dark and show the way
no compass or chart to guide---
save the inner voice, oft ignored,

that now chitters and chatters in fear
then rants with psychotic frenzy, spouting
mad, insane hope. To which that other
voice, cool, collected, sardonic, says:

“My boy, you have lost allyour marbles.”
Against which the voice, the mad, mad voice
offers naught save the mad, psychotic
but beguiling insistence of faith:

this is the way,

this is the way
