This came from a bible study that I lead on the Transfiguration. It is rather unbiblical in its outlook because I was trying to articulate a metaphysic that makes sense to me.
The flames have engulfed the log
combustion glows within the branch.
which is now both wood and fire.
A gracious shift in concentration
allows the eye between the eyes to see
within the rock and soil,
the sea and the sky,
the fire of the unseen.
The possibilities of heaven
well up within the physical forms
of this rectilinear universe:
making real this otherwise illusionary world
of height, and length, and depth.
The branch is gone now
turned to ash and heat –
that is the nature of physical combustion:
to consume and reduce.
The fire that leaks
through the physical endures,
transfiguring
the everyday into the eternal,
the limited into the limitless
the mundane into the numinous …
