I wish that I Could Learn to Hate

not sure if i'm bragging or complaining

--30--

I wish I could have learned to hate,
So that I could hate you;
Then the love I still feel for you
Might have burned away by now.

I wish that I could have learned to call you
The foul and filthy names that men call women they hate.
But even if those names were true ,
I could never use them against you.

I wish I could be angry with you
for going away and leaving me;
Instead I am angry with myself
For letting you get away.

I wish that I could renounce my life
Since-- marriage, career, children-- as
second best, or a mistake. But I can’t
do that because it has been neither.

Conflicted? Damn right that! I am conflicted
Who said life was simple? 'Course, I’ve made it
More complicated than need be: Two loves,
Two sets of what if’s, one regret.

John, I hope you never learn to hate, it's like hanging from a noose 24/7. Great poem, from a gentle man.
