This poem recalls a Nov. 11 now 15 years, or more, past.
Those veterns are pretty much all gone now
but I will remember them!
“Last Post” and “Reveille” sounded
“In Flanders Fields” and “The Act of
Remembrance” read,
to the Lion’s Den we repaired.
There over a tot and a card game
the stories and the pictures came out.
Pictures of young men in woollen battledress
Flat helmets, with Lee-Enfields and smiles.
Stories of Warriors: snipers, and sappers,
and paratroopers; Of battles skirted,
or engaged. A war fought for King and
For a Country that didn’t afford them the vote.
The present faces were lined and creased
blasted by sun, wind and frost, their bodies
crippled by time and by wounds, but
the smiles and the spirit were still strong
This was the face of Cree warriors,
The men of Moose River who came running
When King and Country called . . .
Well written, John, I am sure you will always remember those veterans. If just one person remembers them, then they will never be forgotten by time...Peace, ED & Rufuz
