straight on for Heartbreak Shoal with all sails
drawing to the revenue cutter she shows
a well built pair of heels
Black Merlin slashing towards the rocks
sets Comet a pretty puzzle: port to the open sea or
starboard to the harbour? Comet to the seaward
cheats and waits.
Black Merlin up to the breakers stands so close
that few would credit then ports her helm
turning towards the harbour. Comet turns
to counter and to claim her prize…
But Black Merlin, no easy prize her, continues
on around and winds up standing fair for the open sea.
Surprized Comet is in irons, then, taken full aback,
her foretop goes by the board
Black Merlin reaching for the open sea
free and clear and fairly won sees Comet headed for the rocks tacks back to aid
the stricken revenue cutter.
A line is thrown; a cable passed: Comet is pulled free
and anchored safe till the damage be made good.
A hearty cheer a quick salute and the smuggler is away
reaching for the open sea
