The Old Man and the Wind

From my time in Saskatchewan. The original poem, which is lost, recalls
an actual burial. This current write attempts to reconstruct the lost piece...

For eighty-five years
the old man and the wind
walked together:
through wet year and drought,
blizzard and dust bowl,
two friends upon the prairie.
Man and boy the wind schooled him
he learned to listen and to trust.
The wind played fair with him,
for though the wind and cold
got a piece of his ear in ’36
it saved his life in France in ‘44

Today we laid him to rest
in the little prairie grave yard
on top of the hill
just west of the home place.
The wind was in attendance.
The old one would have laughed
at his citified descendents,
not quite dressed for the weather,
wiggling like school kids,
as the wind, flitting up their coattails
tutored them -- chasing them,
one by one to their cars

At length, we left them alone,
the old man and the wind,
two friends up on the hill…

Marvelous poem, John. The wind truly can be a friend - if wise enough to allow it. Really enjoyed this one.
