A Hero Is Not A Sandwich

There are no lectures and tomatoes
In a Hero
Uniform don't make a hero
Fire, Police Military, Ect., Ect., Ect.
One does not learn
How to become A Hero
It's not taught in any Academies
Nor institutions of learning.

A Hero
Is not a sandwich
There is no ham and cheese
Nor salami
The Hero, dwells within us all
An entity that is the cohesive bonding
That holds, courage and sanity together.

A Hero
is Not A Sandwich
There is no bread, of white
Wheat, rye nor pumpernickel
In the making Of A Hero
Point in question.

While on the Turnpike, returning home
I observed a station wagon
Lose control, as it attempted
To stop, on the shoulder
Landing in a ditch
Luckily stopped upright.

I witness, no less then ten vehicles
Stopped immediately, all drivers dashing
without concern of their safety
Nor what was taking place
That caused the car, to lose control.

Drivers of all nationalities,
Colors and creeds
Charging into the matter unfolding
Before them
I pointed the incident to my wife
Saying
"See what Heroes Are made Of?"

Wonderful message, William; and if and when our time comes, I hope each one of us can be such a hero.

I agree with the sentiments of this poem and it is the unexpected circumstances that makes the hero.

Dear William,
I hear you and agree. It is said that a hero feels the fear and does it anyway. We all have the capacity to be heroes. Circumstances allowing the worst or best of us can surface.
Thanks for a great poem

William,
There really are many Heroes left in this world, that never hesitate to do what needs and has to be done at the moment. I'm just simply amazed at their abilities, their braveness, to be able to set aside their own safety for the well-being of others first.
It feels good when one can read and hear about them. Thank you for this 'feel-good' write William!

Does that also mean that a submarine is not a sandwhich either...? Nothing like bursting my balloon, Bill...I see accidents all the time and I am truly amazed at the amount of people who try to help, when there is so much chance for their own death resulting from trying to save others...and they say the world has become a cold, heartless place...not from where I sit...at least in this situation...Ed

Excellent analogy, William! Thanks for sharing what a blessing people can be. We always hear of the bad that's done. This is great for a change!
