What thoughts crawled through
A condemned man's mind
As a tear
Escaped his dark soul
On this his loneliest night
While he aimlessly stares
At a clear full moon
Before he meets his maker
In the early morning sunlight
As the sun cracks
The horizon's red dawn.
Will the rope snap
As the trap
'Neath his feet is released?
Will the guillotine's blade
Get stuck
Above his exposed neck?
Will the Chairs's electrical switch
Malfunction
Amid a tumultuous storm?
Will every men, in the firing squad
Be issued blanks
Instead of just one?
Will the intravenous
Deadly solution
Be mistakenly administered
using a saline instead?
Will the gas chamber
Capsules
Be misplaced, causing officials
To search for an alternative?
What lurks in his poor head?
Only the Man
He did not believe in
Knows for sure.
This ran a chill down my spine and gave me shivers, William. One does wonder what may go through the mind of the one awaiting execution. I would hope it would be remorse for the lives he had taken, perhaps a moment to understand how the family of the ones he murdered have had to live, but more likely it will be him thinking about his impending death and the fate that awaits him. Excellent writing.
Take care,
Sherry

Wondering the same kinda thoughts.
They hanged kids just for stealing a loaf of bread.
Or if they were unlucky, got sent to Australia.
