What A Dream

What A dream
~~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~

Within some dreams
You wish you were not
Within it’s mist.

I parked my car
In front of
The elementary school
My Grand children attend.

A prearranged date
Was scheduled
For a luncheon with my
Grandchildren
As the other kids ate
The available
Yucky school food.

I tried to surprise my
Grand kids
With their favorite
“Wendy’s”
Soft drinks, fries
Chicken sandwich delight.

It was a clear day
Not a single cloud in the sky
As I closed my car door
The world closed itself
To my heart.

I heard what sounded
Like a huge truck horn
But ‘twas not
I became puzzled
It was a local warning signal.

In my younger days
We used to hear sirens
As warnings of possible
Air raids or worst
Nuclear attack.

Without the skies darkening
A tornado struck the school
As my wife entered through
Its doors.

I ran towards her
Hoping and praying
Without regards
To my life and or safety.

My feet were heavy like lead
My whole world turned
Into slow motion
Within my head.

All was gone within a flash
The school structure
Was no more
The only thing standing
That survived.

Was my wife and grand children
All else was gone
In a flash
Thank God it was all
But a bad dream.

William, this grabbed me hard as I was reading it, each line of images kept me still and waiting line after line of uncertainty...snap, oh...how great...it's only a dream. Your voice speaks in a stern realism which draws the reader in. You had me fooled until the end...glad it was only a dream. Enjoyed!

Scary dream...I had a dream of a flood once like this...worried me for days. You've penned it well my friend, expressed well! Thank God it was a dream!

As nightmares come, this one was one of those rare with a happy end, to remember it and to write about shows the readiness of the author to have the presence of mind to run disregarding his own life and wrestle from a twister the flesh of his own.

Wow! A nightmare for sure,this one is so scary when it comes to things we can't do anything about like tornadoes!Well written William!
