He Kept His Promise

It was my JV championship

Basketball Game

I wanted so much my grandpa

To attend

As he had Promised

But we couldn’t wait for him

Time was running short

We left a message for him

To meet us there

The game’s score

Was running close

I did not see my grandpa

Within the stands

Nor in the gym

Suddenly there was a distinct

Scent in the air

Of soft lime, gin and tonic

Very familiar to me

His scented breath

Grandpa always dank

A gin and tonic

Before enjoying my games

At the local school

I searched the stand

There he was with his big smile

Shaved head, white van dyke

Waxed mustache

He was a sight to behold

As always, cheering me on

It was like adrenalin

Gave me a second wind

Inspiring me

To score a few more baskets

The visiting team

Was ahead by several points

Several minutes ago

They were winning,

With smile on our faces

The buzzer rang

The game was over

And we won

I changed clothes

I was looking for my grandpa

When my dad said lets go

I replied but Grandpa?

What about him

He asked?

He was there in the stand

I said

No he was not

I did not see him

Dad persisted

Grandpa kept his promise

To watch me play

My championship game

But he couldn’t in reality

After he dressed to see

 The game

He fell asleep, never woke up

Unknown to me

Grandpa never made it

To the game

Grandpa was dead.

Okay, so I'm tearing now. This is sad but beautiful. You have me thinking about my own Pepe - the way he smelled when he was alive, and the way he looked at the wake. Thank you for sharing this poem and your memory! Hugs,
Sheila

D'Artagnan, they say that there is more between sky and earth than we can imagine or believe.
And believe it, your Grandad was there, you saw him and he saw you, and that's the only thing that matters.

You imagination was alrighty that night. He was their with you in spirit anyway and you won the game. Sorry for his death, I lost my grandpa at13 and still remember visiting him in a nursing home. They say he used to get so drunk too and walk down the street to home where all the neighbors would see him. Stories from the past are the best, aren't they?

Oh my gosh, William! This gave me tingles and it moved me too. It reminds of a song in Hawaii, "Blind Man on the Bleachers." It always brought tears to my eyes each time I'd hear it, just like your beautiful poem did ... Yes, your Grandpa was there and your team won ... Very moving ... Loved it, William ... hugs

Some things are more important than even death. Love of a grandson is one, and keeping promises is another. Glad he could be there for you, and that you were open enough to see him say good-bye.

Oh William!!! This story gives me the goosebumps for the connection between you and your grandpa!!! Your grandpa really loves you, you better believe it!!!

My own grandpa had also died in his sleep when I was around 6 and half years old. However, his spirit had never left me. When my mom passed away I had troubles in letting go, I kept dreaming that I was a little girl waiting outside my school for her to pick me up, and I was ALWAYS looking for her in my dreams. This had stopped after my grandpa appeared in one of my dreams and frowned at me for looking for my mother. You can still read about this in my post called "I think I Saw Grandpa Last Night."

When grandpa's loves they never die. Even after they passed away, they still continue to love us and be there for us!

May God Bless You Always!

Oh William,
He was there in spirit, definitely!!! It was his way of saying Good Bye to his beloved grandson. May his spirit rest in peace and live long into your heart.
