The First Day

~*~

It was his first day “There”

To him it was something “New”

For today starts

The road to understanding.

She woke him early

Dawn was not outside

Their window yet

She prepared him

For his first day

Bathe him, combed his hair

Selected

What he was to wear

She made him

His favorite breakfast

Lovingly washed his face again

And cleaned his hands.

She held his hand tenderly

Escorting him to the garage

Opening the car door

Sat and secured him

On the front passenger side

Clicked the child lock

So he not open the door

While she drives

For her

It was a painful fifteen mile drive

Thoughts went through her head

Hoping he do well

Getting used to being away.

She knew one thing

He will get along with others

He was that way

Charismatic

Others enjoyed his company

He smiled

Upon meeting new friends.

The time has arrived

Pulling into the parking lot

A “Teacher” was waiting

By the door

She walked him to the front

She kissed him, whispering

“I Love You”

I will pick you later

She watched him

Disappeared in the building.

She returned to the car

For four hours

Of his first day

She cried and waited there,

Inscribed

Above the entrance door

Were carved, the words

Alzheimer’s Rehabilitation Center.

Quite a twist at the end of this gripping poem. I worked in an Alzheimer's unit in a nursing home as a housekeeper. Boy...did I have my favorite patients! You describe their reliance perfectly. Like children, Alzheimer patients have an innocence that I couldn't help but find endearing. Hugs,
Sheila

ohh, so sad. I was reminded of my first day in school, until the last line. Twisted ending. Great write, though.

Oh brother! at least he don't understand (that's what the docs said) for a moment my heart cringed, I though you were to hit me with a "War-Veterans Rehabilitation Center", because he would understand and there will be two crying that moment.
Alzheimers...I hope He doesn't have those plans for me, I kind of like my dignity, don't want to go without it.

What I thought was a write about a child's first day of school has turned into something unexpected. William, this is so beautiful. You have moved me to tears.

My mother in law who did not want to go to daycare for Altheimer's complained too. She is dead now, but eventually went into a nursing home too. She just did not like leaving her home each morning with her Daughter and her daughter found it hard to take her there too. Good story, just the way is with this type disease.

William, I knew that you were talking about Alzheimer's, I just knew it. My dearest friend has a dad that has Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, she takes him to daycare every day...It is a very sad thing, but these day cares are very good for them..Keeps them active and the family can have a break.
Much peace, love, and light to you my dearest friend,
Amber "V"
